A mixed number has two parts. The first part is a whole number. What is the second part? An improper fraction or a proper fraction.

Why don’t we start by defining a proper fraction and an improper fraction? In an improper fraction, the numerator is larger than the denominator and in a proper fraction, the numerator is smaller than the denominator. A mixed number has two parts: a whole number and a fractional part. It’s always a part that is less than one.

An improper fraction always has a value greater than one and a proper fraction has a value of less than one. The fractional piece of a mixed number has a value of less than one. This second part of a mixed number is a proper fraction.

Mixed numbers contain two parts. The first one is a whole number and the second part is a proper fraction.
