Find the length of the key below. So we’re given a key who’s lined up against zero on the measure below. And the other end of the key ends up here on the measure.

The units for the measurements, the abbreviation there in means inches. So the length of the key is nearly two inches, so it’s one and some fraction of an inch.

So let’s look carefully at how many divisions there are between the one and the two. So starting at one, we can go one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen divisions. So the length of the key is one and some sixteenths of an inch.

And if we count carefully, one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen. We can see that that’s fourteen sixteenths of an inch.

Well fourteen sixteenths can be simplified, so we can divide both of those by two, so that becomes seven over eight. So the answer is the key is one and seven-eighths inches.
