One school has 440 students and another has 253 students. How many students are in both schools?

We want to know how many students are in both schools. To combine both of the schools, we’ll need to use addition. How should we add 440 plus 253? We can line them up based on their place value.

We add the digits in the units place: zero plus three equals three. Adding the digits in the 10th place, four plus five equals nine. And when we add the digits in the 100th place, four plus two equals six. When we combine both of schools, there are a total of 693 students.
