A farmer has 800 apples and sold 100. How many apples does the farmer have left?

How many apples did the farmer start with? Our question tells us that he had 800 apples in the beginning. The farmer sold 100 of his apples. Does selling something mean you’ll have more or less? When we sell things, we have less than we started with. And that tells us that we need to do subtraction.

We need to say 800 minus 100 equals the number of apples the farmer has left. If we had eight hundreds and we took one hundred away, we would be left with seven hundreds. Another way to write seven hundreds is seven zero zero. If the farmer had 800 apples and sold 100 of them, he would have 700 apples left.
