Subtract three 100s from 558. Hint, use the place value blocks if you need to.

We have to calculate 558 subtract three 100s. So, we have to work out 558 take away 300. Let’s start by looking at the ones digits. There are eight ones and nothing to subtract. So, we’re left with eight ones. Now, let’s move into the tens column. There are five 10s and nothing to subtract. So, we’re left with five 10s. Now, let’s look at the hundreds. There are five 100s, and we need to subtract three. We’re left with two 100s.

Eight take away zero, in the ones, left us with eight ones. Five 10s take away no 10s leaves us with five 10s. And five 100s take away three 100s leaves us with two 100s. The only digit which changed was the hundreds digit because we only had to subtract three 100s. We have no 10s to subtract and no ones to subtract. 558 subtract 300 equals 258.
