Five plus seven equals what?

We need to add together five and seven. We can use a known fact to help us. We know that five plus five makes 10. So we could take five of the pink counters and add them to the five orange ones. Five and five makes 10 and the two leftover makes 12. We started with five counters. We added five more to make 10. Then, we added two more to make 12. So to add five and seven, we split seven into five and two. We added two fives together to make 10 and then added the two to make 12.

Five plus seven equals 12.
