62 take away 54 equals what?

A quick way to work out the answer would be to find the difference between 62 and 54. If we start at 54, how many spaces do we need to move forward to reach number 62? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. 62 take away 54 equals eight. Number 62 has six tens and two ones. We have to take away 54. 54 has five tens and four ones.

Let’s start by taking away four ones from 62. But we don’t have enough ones. We’ve only got two ones. So we need to take a ten and swap it for 10 ones. Now, we have five tens and we have 12 ones. Let’s take away four ones. That leaves us with eight ones. 12 take away four equals eight.

We’ve got five tens left and we need to take away the five tens from 54. 54 has five tens. If we take those five tens away, we’re left with no tens. 62 take away 54 equals eight. We started with 62 and we took away 54. We were left with eight.
