Place value is all about groups of 10. 10 ones make one ten and 10 tens make one hundred. How many groups of 10 make two hundreds?
We know that place value, which is the different values that a digit has if we put it in different places in a number, is about groups of 10. In this particular question, we’re thinking about ones, tens, and hundreds. The first fact that we’re reminded about is that 10 ones are equal to one ten. And then, we’re reminded that 10 tens equal one hundred. And the question asks us, how many groups of 10 make two hundreds?
And the fact that we can use to help us answer this question is the second one. If we know that 10 tens make one hundred, we can use this to help us understand how many tens make two hundreds. To get from one hundred to two hundreds, we’ve doubled the amount. We’ve multiplied it by two.
So, to make double the amount of hundreds, we’re going to need double the amount of tens. So instead of 10 tens, we’re going to need 20 tens. If 10 tens make one hundred, then the number of groups of 10 that we’re going to need to make two hundreds is 20. The answer is 20 tens.
