Amina is making designs with two different shapes. She gives each shape a value. Total value of the first shape is 147. The total value of the second shape is 111. Calculate the value of each shape.

We can add letters to the shapes that Amina used to make her two designs. This helps us to see that Amina’s first design has one extra hexagon. So the difference between the total value of each of Amina’s designs is one hexagon.

So if we find the difference between 147 and 111, that will tell us the value of one hexagon. Seven take away one is six. Four take away one is three. One take away one gives us zero. So the value of a hexagon is 36.

To find the value of this shape, we need to subtract the value of the hexagon, 36, from 111. We can’t subtract six from one. We couldn’t subtract a six from one. So we took a 10 from the tens column and exchanged this for 10 tens to help us calculate 11 take away six, which is five. We can’t subtract three from zero. So we took one from the hundreds column and add 10 tens to the tens column. 10 take away three is seven. 111 subtract 36 or the value of a hexagon is 75.

So the total of three of these shapes is 75. To find the value of one of these shapes, we need to divide 75 by three, which is 25. So the value of a hexagon is 36, and the value of this shape is 25.
