Video: Subtracting One-Digit Numbers from Two-Digit Numbers by Breaking Them Apart

We can break apart numbers to subtract as shown. First subtract to get 60. How many ones do we take away? Now, subtract the rest of the ones. What is 62 take away six?

We can see from the calculation that’s shown, this problem is all about subtracting six from 62. And in particular, it’s about breaking apart numbers to help us subtract. If we look at the calculation that we’re shown, we can see that the number six, that’s the number that we’re taking away, has been broken apart, or partitioned, into two numbers, two and four. But why would we want to do that? Can’t we just start with 62 and take away six all in one go?

Before we answer that question, here’s another question to answer. Which would you rather subtract six from? 62 or 60? Well, it should be easier to subtract from 60 because it’s a multiple of 10. We can subtract quickly from multiples of 10. And so, that’s why it can help us to break apart numbers. We can break up the number that we’re taking away into two parts.

In the first part, we subtract enough to take us to 60. And this is what the first question’s asking us. First, subtract to get to 60. How many ones do we take away? We start with 62. And we want to get to 60. We need to take away two ones. That’s why the number six has been broken apart into two and another number. Because taking away two takes us to 60. Now we’re on the number 60. And as we’ve said already, it can sometimes be a lot easier to take away from a multiple of 10.

The second question then asks us to subtract the rest of the ones. What is 62 take away six? We’ve already taken away two ones. Now we need to take away the remaining four ones. 60 take away four equals 56. And so, we know that the answer to the subtraction 62 take away six equals 56.

We calculated the answer by partitioning, or breaking apart, the number six into two and four. We wanted to do this so that we got to 60. And we’re able to subtract then from 60. The number of ones that we took away to get to 60 was two ones. We then took away the rest of the ones, which was four ones, and we found the answer. 62 take away six equals 56.
