The Number Zero

In this video, we will learn how to read, write, and model the number zero. We use numbers to help us count.

Here are two flies. The chameleon was hungry. He’s eaten one of the flies. Now, we only have one fly left. The chameleon’s eaten it. How many flies are there now? There are no flies left. We use the number zero to show this.

Let’s practise writing the number zero.

When we write the number zero, we always start in the same place, here at the top. And we follow the arrows. Let’s give it a try. We start at the top and we follow the arrows all the way around to the top. Let’s try writing the number zero without the dots to help us. We start at the top and we go all the way around back to the top again. Let’s try one more time. Start at the top and go all the way around.

Let’s practise reading, writing, and modelling the number zero.

Select the picture that represents zero apples.

We’re shown five different plates and we have to select the one which has zero apples. It must be the first plate. It has no apples. There are lots of apples on the second plate. The third plate has one apple. The fourth plate has one, two, three, four, five apples. And the fifth plate has one, two apples. The picture that represents zero apples is the first one. There are no apples on the first plate. And we represent this amount using the number zero.

We use the number zero to mean there are no items. There are two ladybugs. There are zero butterflies. What number is missing? There are what ants?

We’re shown three different pictures and three different sentences. In the first picture, there are two ladybugs on the leaf. This is what the sentence tells us. There are two ladybugs. The second picture shows us that there are no butterflies on the leaf. The second sentence tells us that there are zero butterflies. In the third sentence, the number is missing. We need to count the ants and write the missing number to complete the sentence: one, two, three. There are three ants. The missing number is number three.

What number is missing? We’re shown a picture of a leaf. There are what caterpillars.

We’re shown a picture of a leaf and we have to count the number of caterpillars. There are no caterpillars on the leaf. So, the missing number is zero. There are zero caterpillars. We use the number zero to show that there are no caterpillars on the leaf.

What have we learned in this video? We learned how to read, write, and model the number zero.
