There was one mommy rabbit. She had six babies. How many rabbits are there now?

We know that there’s one mommy rabbit plus six babies. And the question is asking us to work out how many rabbits there are altogether. We need to add the rabbits. We have to add together one and six.

If we use a number line to help us add one and six, we would have to start at number one and count forward six more. But there’s a quicker way we can add. We can start with the largest number in our addition. We could change the order of the numbers around. We could start with six rabbits and add one more.

Six plus one is seven. One more than six is seven. It doesn’t matter which order we add the numbers. It’s quicker to start with the largest number first. One plus six is seven. Six plus one is seven.

If there’s one mummy rabbit and she has six babies, there are seven rabbits now. Six and one more make seven.
