Eight plus six equals what?

Here we have a ten frame with eight counters and another ten frame with six counters. This ten frame has two empty spaces. So we could take two pink counters and add them to the orange counters to fill the two empty spaces: one, two. Now our first ten frame has 10 counters, and the second has four. 10 and four makes 14.

We had eight counters. First, we added two and then we added four. We split six into two parts: two and four. First, we added the two to eight and then we added the four. Eight plus six equals 14.
