Telling Time
In this video, we will learn how to
tell time to the hour on analog and digital clocks. This is an analog clock. Analog clocks have a clock
face. The numbers on the clock face are
used to help us tell the time. Analog clocks have two hands or
dials. We call the longest hand the minute
hand. When the minute hand is pointing to
number 12 on the clock face, that means it’s something o’clock.
Analog clocks also have an hour
hand. This is the shortest hand on the
clock face. When we’re telling the time, we use
the hour hand to tell us the hour. So the time on the clock is 12
o’clock. Now, it’s 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3
o’clock, 4 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 6 o’clock, 7 o’clock, 8 o’clock, 9 o’clock, 10
o’clock, 11 o’clock, and back to 12 o’clock again.
This is a digital clock. Digital clocks don’t have a face or
hands. They just show digits. These two digits tell us how many
minutes there are on the clock, and these two digits tell us the hour. And digital clocks have these two
little squares which we use to separate the hour and the minute digits. When the minute digits are two
zeros, we know it’s something o’clock. The hour digits tell us it’s 12:00
o’clock on this digital clock. Let’s practice telling time to the
hour on a digital clock.
We already know that this clock
says 12:00 o’clock. The time is now 01:00 o’clock. Now, it’s 02:00 o’clock, 03:00
o’clock, 04:00 o’clock, 05:00 o’clock, 06:00 o’clock, 07:00 o’clock, 08:00 o’clock,
09:00 o’clock, 10:00 o’clock, 11:00 o’clock, and back to 12:00 o’clock again. Let’s try some questions now to
help us practice telling the time to the hour using analog and digital clocks.
What time is shown on the
clock?
We’re shown an analog clock. The longest hand or the minute hand
is pointing to number 12. This means it’s something
o’clock. And the hour hand is pointing to
the number four. The time shown on the clock is 4:00
o’clock.
Matthew and Jacob were both asked
to show the time 3:00 o’clock on their clocks. Who was correct?
In this question, we’re shown two
different clocks. This is Matthew’s clock, and this
is Jacob’s clock. They were asked to show the time
3:00 o’clock. Who was correct? Was it Matthew or Jacob? To answer this question, we need to
look at the time shown on both children’s clocks. The minute hand on Matthew’s clock
is pointing to number 12. That means it’s something o’clock,
and the hour hand is pointing to the number three. So Matthew was correct. His clock says 3:00 o’clock.
It looks like Jacob got the hour
hand and the minute hand the wrong way round. The minute hand on his clock is
pointing to number three, which means it’s quarter past the hour. And the other hand is pointing to
number 12, which means it’s quarter past 12. Matthew and Jacob were both asked
to show the time 3:00 o’clock. Matthew was correct.
What time is shown on the
clock?
In this question, we’re being asked
to tell the time on a digital clock. Digital clocks don’t have faces or
hands, so we need to look at the digits. These two digits tell us the
minutes. If these digits are both zeros, we
know it’s something o’clock. These digits tell us the hour. The zero and five mean it’s 05:00
o’clock. What time is shown on the
clock? It is 05:00 o’clock.
Which of the following digital
clocks displays the time nine o’clock?
In this question, we’re shown three
digital clocks. We have to pick the one which shows
the time 9 o’clock. Did you notice that all of the
clocks start with the digit nine? This is the hour digit. We need to look at the minute
digits. There are two zeros or no
minutes. This means it’s something o’clock,
and we already know the hour digit is the number nine.
This is the digital clock which
displays the time 9:00 o’clock. This clock says 9:30, and this
clock says 9:15. We know it’s something o’clock on a
digital clock when the last two digits are zeros. So the clock which displays 9:00
o’clock is the first one.
What have we learned in this
video? We’ve learned how to tell time to
the hour on an analog and a digital clock.
