Here is the morning timetable for Chen’s class this week. What is the total number of hours for English on this timetable?
Let’s take a closer look at the timetable. The first column tells us the time of day. And there are three sessions: one from nine till 10:30, one from 10:30 to 11 which is break time, and one from 11 till 12. And each of these columns tells us the day of the week and the subjects studied. So for example, on Monday, we have maths then break then English.
We need to find the total of number of hours for English on the timetable. On Monday, Chen has English from 11 am to 12 pm, which is one hour. On Tuesday, Chen has English from nine to 10:30 am, which is one hour and 30 minutes. Chen doesn’t have any English classes on Wednesday. On Thursday, Chen’s English class is from nine till 10:30 am again, which we know is one hour and 30 minutes. And on Friday, Chen’s English class is from 11 am to 12 pm, which is an hour.
Now that we’ve recorded all of Chen’s English classes, we just need to add together the amount of time she spent on English. So if we add together the hours, that’s a total of four. And the two lots of 30 minutes or two half hours equals one hour.
So the total number of hours for English on this timetable is five hours.
