Anthony has a dog that weighs 13 pounds. Express the weight in ounces.

We need some other information. We need to remember how many ounces are in a pound. One pound equals 16 ounces. Anthony’s dog weighs 13 pounds. How many ounces would that be?

If every pound is 16 ounces, then to find the number of ounces in 13 pounds, we’ll need to multiply. We’ll need to multiply 13 by 16. So that’s what we’ll do, 13 times 16. Starting with our six in the ones place, six times three is 18. Carry our one. Six times one is six plus one is seven.

Moving on to our 10s place, one times three is three. And then one times one is one. Adding these values together, eight plus zero is eight. Seven plus three is 10. So we write our zero and carry our one. Then we have one plus one, which is two. 13 times 16 is 208. Anthony’s 13-pound dog weighs 208 ounces.
