Matthew is adding using a number line. Pick the sum he is working on. Is it 476 plus 229, 467 plus 229, 476 plus 222, or 476 plus 292? What is the total?
We can see that Matthew starts with the number 476. And all of these sums begin with the number 476, except the second one. We can eliminate that. We know it’s not the correct answer. Matthew adds two lots of 100. Altogether he adds 200. Each of these numbers has two 100s also. Next, Matthew adds two 10s. This number has nine 10s. We can eliminate this sum because it has nine tens. We’re looking for a number which has two 10s.
Finally, Matthew adds the ones. He adds four and then five. Four and five is nine. Which of our numbers has nine ones? It’s the first sum. Matthew starts with 476. Then he adds 229. The second part of the question asks us, what the total is? What is 476 plus 229? We can use the number line to help us add. 476 plus 100 is 576. 576 plus another 100 is 676. 676 and 10 more is 686. 686 plus 10 is 696. 696 plus four is 700 plus five is 705. Matthew is working on the sum 476 plus 229. The total of this sum is 705.
