Which of the following correctly
lists the phyla of kingdom Fungi? (A) Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta, and
Tracheophyta. (B) Zygomycota, Ascomycota, and
Basidiomycota. (C) Sarcodina, Ciliophora, and
Flagellata. Or (D) Annelida, Nematoda, and
Platyhelminthes.
The many species in the Fungi
kingdom can be divided into several different phyla. Let’s take a look at three of these
phyla and compare some of the characteristics that distinguish them.
The phylum Basidiomycota consists
of many of the species that we commonly think of as mushrooms. Individuals within this phylum
usually reproduce sexually by releasing spores from structures called basidia. Fungi in the phylum Zygomycota
include many of the species that we commonly call mold that grows on bread and
fruit, like this orange. The fungi in this group can
reproduce either sexually or asexually by producing spores, which are released from
structures called sporangia.
Another phylum within kingdom Fungi
is called Ascomycota, which can also reproduce either sexually or asexually. Individuals in this phylum release
their spores from saclike structures called asci. Examples in the phylum Ascomycota
are yeast and Penicillium.
We now have more than enough
information to answer this question correctly. The answer choice which correctly
lists some of the phyla in kingdom Fungi is (B): Zygomycota, Ascomycota, and
Basidiomycota.
