Making Three and Four

In this video, we will learn how to use pictures and addition equations to show the different ways to make three and four. Let’s start with the number three. Here are three cupcakes. If we have two different plates, how many ways can we make three? This plate has no cupcakes, but this plate has three. We put all the cupcakes on the same plate. Our addition sentence tells us that zero plus three makes three. We found one way to make three. Zero plus three equals three.

Now we’ve moved one of the cakes onto the other plate. On the first plate, we have one cupcake, and on the other plate, we have two. One plus two makes three. Zero plus three equals three and one plus two equals three. We found two different ways to make three. Two and one makes three. Our addition sentence would say two plus one equals three.

We found three different ways to make three so far. If we put all the cupcakes on the first plate, there are three and zero on the other. Three and zero makes three. We found four different ways to make the number three: zero plus three, one plus two, two plus one, and three plus zero.

How many ways can we make the number four? If we put all of the green blocks in the first group and none in the second, we can say that four plus zero makes four. And if we write our addition sentence down, it would say four plus zero equals four.

We found one way to make the number four. Three plus one makes four. Two plus two is four. One plus three equals four. And zero plus four equals four. We found five different ways to make four: four plus zero, three plus one, two plus two, one plus three, and zero plus four.

Let’s practice finding different ways to make three and four with some questions.

There are three elephants. Zero plus three is three. Fill in the missing numbers to find another way to get three. What plus what is three?

In the first picture, there’s one elephant. And in the second picture, there are one, two elephants. One plus two is three. The missing numbers are one and two. Zero plus three is three and one plus two is three.

Find the missing number to make three. One plus what is three?

We know that there’s one red counter. How many orange counters are there? One, two. The missing number is two. One plus two is three.

Charlotte has shown one way to make four. Write the addition expression that matches the model.

There’s one red brick and one, two, three green bricks. One plus three is four. The addition expression that matches the model is one plus three.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned that we can use pictures and addition expressions to find different ways to make the numbers three and four.
