Jennifer received a salary raise of four percent. Before the raise, she was making 37300 dollars per year. How much more will she earn the following year?
To receive a raise means we will be making more money, meaning they raise the value of our pay. So before the raise, Jennifer was making 37300 dollars per year. So if we are to raise this four percent, we need to find four percent of this number, because when saying four percent of 37300, the word “of” means to multiply.
But before we multiply, we need to rewrite four percent as a decimal. So we drop the percentage sign. And since it was four percent, the decimal place would be here. And we need to move it two places to the left: one, two. So we can add in a zero. So we need to take point zero four times 37300. And that is equal to 1492.
And the question is asking not how much she will make the following year, but how much more will she make. Well, they’re raising her pay this much, what we just found. So Jennifer will make 1492 dollars more the following year.
