How many outputs does a NOT gate
have?
In order to answer this question
about the number of outputs of a NOT gate, it will be useful to recall what it is
that a NOT gate does. A NOT gate acts to negate the value
that’s input to it. The symbol for a NOT gate is a
triangle oriented so that one of its corners is pointing to the right, and on this
rightward-pointing corner there’s a small circle.
Since the NOT gate simply negates
the value that’s input to it, this means that a NOT gate must take a single input
value, which it then negates to produce a single output value. Specifically, if this single input
to the NOT gate has a value of zero, then the NOT gate produces a single output with
a value of one. Meanwhile, if the input to the NOT
gate is one, then the single output from the gate has a value of zero. Either way, because of how a NOT
gate works, it’s always going to be a single input value going to a single output
value.
So our answer is that a NOT gate
has one output.
