Do these calculations have the same answer? Write “yes” or “no” next to each box. One is done for you. Eight plus two and two plus eight, yes. Eight times two and two times eight. Eight take away two and two take away eight. Eight divided by two and two divided by eight.

Here, we have four pairs of calculations. Each pair has the same two numbers and the same operation, plus, take away, multiply, or divide. We can change the order of the numbers when we’re adding. And the answer stays the same. Eight plus two is 10. And two plus eight is 10. So the answer to the question, do these calculations have the same answer, is yes. The second pair of numbers still have the numbers eight and two. But this time, we’re multiplying. Can we change the order of the numbers when we’re multiplying? Eight times two is 16. And two times eight is 16. Do these calculations have the same answer? Yes, they do.

This time, we’re subtracting. Does eight take away two give us the same answer as two take away eight? No, it doesn’t. This time, we’re dividing. Is eight divided by two the same as two divided by eight? No. When we’re adding and multiplying, we can change the order of the calculation by swapping the numbers around. And the answer is still the same. If we’re subtracting or dividing, we can’t change the order of the numbers because the answer doesn’t stay the same.

So eight times two and two times eight does have the same answer. And the other two calculations don’t. Eight take away two and two take away eight don’t have the same answer. Eight divided by two and two divided by eight don’t have the same answer. We wrote yes or no next to each box.
