David has used 10 frames to show two numbers. What number has he made with the blue counters? What number has he made with the pink counters? Compare the numbers in the 10 frames. Which is greater?

We have to find the number he’s made with the blue counters. And then, the number he’s made with the pink counters. Then we have to compare the numbers and find out which one is greater. A 10 frame is 10 squares made of two rows of five.

So, we know there are five blue counters, and one more makes a total of six blue counters. Five plus one is six. Now, we have to count the pink counters. On the top row there are five spaces, but one of the spaces is empty. One less than five gives us four. There are six blue counters and four pink counters. Which number is greater, six or four? There are six blue counters, four pink counters. Six is more than four. So, six is greater. David made six blue counters and four pink counters. Six is greater than four.
