What is the sum of 171 and 311?

Let’s take these two values and line them up vertically, one seven one plus three one one. When we’re solving an addition problem in this way, we start by adding all the way on the right in the units place. One plus one is two. We shift to the left one position. And we add the tens place. Seven plus one equals eight. Again, we shift to the left. And we add in the hundreds place. One plus three equals four. This tells us that 171 plus 311 equals 482.
