A store started a sale, offering a discount of 55 percent on all its products. Express this percentage as a fraction in the simplest form.

So there are two stages to what we’re being asked to do here. First, we need to express the percentage 55 percent as a fraction. And then we need to convert this fraction to its simplest form. To complete the first stage, we need to remember that percent means out of 100. Therefore, 55 percent can be written as a fraction, 55 out of 100.

Next, we need to convert this fraction to its simplest form. It currently isn’t in its simplest form as the numerator and denominator share a common factor of five. We need to divide both the numerator and denominator by five. This gives 11 over 20.

This fraction can’t be simplified further as 11 is a prime number and it isn’t a factor of 20, meaning that they don’t share any common factors. As a fraction in its simplest form, 55 percent is equal to 11 over 20.
