If you weigh two hundred and fifteen pounds on Earth, you would weigh thirty-five point four eight pounds on the Moon. Express the weight on the Moon as a mixed number in the simplest form.

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction combined together. They call it a mixed number because it’s a whole number and a fraction mixed into one. An example of a mixed number would be one and a half. For the decimal, that would be one point five. You’re combining the whole number, one, and the fraction, one-half, into one number and we call it one and a half.

So we wanna change our number, thirty-five point four eight, from a decimal to a fraction. So that way, it can be a mixed number. Our example of one and a half, you can think of it as one plus one-half. And together, the mixed number is one and a half. So for thirty-five point four eight, we have the whole number thirty-five and then a point forty-eight. Again, thirty-five is our whole number, and point four eight is the same as forty-eight one hundredths.

Let’s take a closer look of how we got forty-eight one hundredths. Looking at our number, thirty-five point four eight, four is in the tenths place value and eight is in hundredths place value. So to write that as a fraction, we take our farthest number to the right, and that’s where our number will go over. So since eight is in the hundredths spot, we put forty-eight over one hundred. Now forty-eight over one hundred actually reduces. If you can take a common factor out of your numerator and your denominator, you should do that and it will reduce your fraction. So forty-eight is divisible by four and one hundred is divisible by four. So forty-eight over one hundred reduces to twelve over twenty-five. So to write this as a mixed number, we combine thirty-five and the twelve twenty-fifths.

Therefore, if you weigh two hundred and fifteen on Earth, you would weigh thirty-five point four eight pounds on the Moon which, written as a mixed number, is thirty-five and twelve twenty-fifths pounds.
