Matthew had 17 toy cars. He lost six of the cars. He can work out how many cars are left by completing either number sentence: 17 take away six equals what or six plus what equals 17. How many cars are left?
This bar model represents the 17 toy cars that Matthew had to begin with. We know that he lost six of the cars. And we have to work out how many cars he has left. The question tells us that there are two ways to work out the answer.
First, we could work out 17 take away six. We could start at 17 on the number line and count back six. One, two, three, four, five, six. 17 take away six is 11. The question tells us we can find the missing number by working out six plus what equals 17. In other words, we have to work out what to add to six to make 17.
We know that six plus 10 make 16. And if we add one more, that will take us to 17. So six plus 11 make 17. 17 take away six equals 11. Six plus 11 equals 17. This means that there are 11 cars left. If Matthew had 17 toy cars and he lost six of them, he would have 11 left.
