If 𝑥 divided by four equals 12, what is the value of 𝑥?

In order to solve this one-step equation, we need to do the same to the left as we do to the right of the equation; this is known as balancing. To balance this equation, we’re gonna multiply both sides by four. On the left-hand side, we have four multiplied by 𝑥 divided by four and on the right-hand side, we have four multiplied by 12.

On the left-hand side, the fours cancel because four multiplied by quarter is one, leaving us with one 𝑥 or 𝑥. On the right-hand side, four multiplied by 12 is 48. This means that the value of 𝑥 is 48, when 𝑥 divided by four equals 12.

We can check this answer by substituting the 48 back to our equation: 48 divided by four equals 12.
