During the World Cup, the income from three different sponsors was five million and three hundred thousand pounds, seven hundred thousand pounds, and two hundred and five thousand pounds. What was the total income?
This problem asked us to find a total income from three different sponsors in the World Cup. And we’re given three different numbers. Now, the first thing we can notice about these numbers is that they’re written in words. So in order to add them together, it might be helpful for us to write them out using digits. Because they’re large numbers that we need to add together, let’s write them out vertically, so that we can add them vertically using column edition.
First of all, we can label our columns so that we get the digits in the right places. We’ve got our ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. And we need to go as high as millions. One of the numbers has a number of millions. Now, let’s identify the three numbers that we can see in the question. These are the three amounts of income from three different sponsors. Our first amount is 5300000 pounds. So we need to write a five in the millions place, a three in the hundred thousands place, and the rest of the digits can be zeros, 5300000.
Our second value then is 700000. So we can write a seven in the hundred thousands place. And all the other digits then can be zeros, 700000. And our final value is 205000. That’s a two in hundred thousands place, a five in the thousands place. And we can write zeroes as placeholders everywhere else, 205000.
Now, to find the total income, we just need to add these three amounts together. We can see there’s a lot of zeros in this number, so we can quickly see that the ones, the tens, and the hundreds are all going to add up to zero. There is also only a five in the thousands column. The ten thousands adds up to zero as well. And if we had the hundred thousands digits, we’re adding three plus seven plus two. And we know that three and seven are a pair; they make 10. So three plus seven plus two must be two more than 10 which is 12.
And finally in the millions column, we’ve only got the five at the top and the one that we’ve exchanged that equal six million all together. If the income from three different sponsors in the World Cup was 5300000 pounds, 700000 pounds, and also 205000 pounds, then we know that the total income will be equal to 6205000 pounds. We converted the numbers from written form into digits to help us to add them together. Because they were such large numbers, we used column edition. The total income is 6205000 pounds.
