The given graph shows the revenue generated by a company’s major products. Determine the range of the monthly revenue generated by product 𝐵.

Let’s begin by having a look at the graph that we’re given. We can see that the months are along the 𝑥-axis and the revenue in dollars is on the 𝑦-axis. The three different products are shown by the three different colored lines, with product 𝐴 the lower-line graph, product 𝐵 the middle-line graph, and product 𝐶 the top-line graph. If we look at the graph for product 𝐴 in month one, we can see that, in that month, product 𝐴 generated 4000 dollars in revenue. In the second month, it generated 6000 dollars.

We’re asked to work out the range of the monthly revenue for product 𝐵, which will be the central-line graph. We can calculate the range by working out the highest data value subtract the lowest data value. So, if we look at the graph for product 𝐵, the highest value in this graph is 14000 dollars, which occurs both in months five and six. The lowest data value is 8000, which occurs in months one, two, three, and four. 14000 subtract 8000 gives us 6000. It’s always good to include the units in our answer, so we can give the value that the range is 6000 dollars.

Graphs like this can be useful to help us visually compare the ranges of some products. For example, we can see that for product 𝐴 there is essentially a larger gap between the highest value and the smallest value. The range for product 𝐴 here would be 10000 dollars. However, we can give the range of product 𝐵 as 6000 dollars.
