How many cats are there in total? Two cats and six cats.

This question asks us to find the number of cats in total. The word “total” means that we need to add our two groups of cats together. In other words, we need to find the answer to two plus another six. When we add together two groups like this, we can find the answer by counting on. We already know that there are two cats in our first group. So we don’t need to count them. We can just say the number two. And so to find the answer, we just need to count on from two another six numbers. Two and six more is what?

Let’s find out. Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. We could show the same answer using a number track. Start with the number two and find six more. One, two, three, four, five, six. We’ve reached the number eight. Two plus six more makes eight. So if we have a group of two cats and another group of six cats, we have eight cats in total.
