Find the missing number from this
model, then find the product 25 times 53.
The model that we’ve been given is
using partial products. The first thing they did was
multiply the tens by the tens, which was 20 times 50. After that, they multiplied the
tens by the ones. That was the tens on the bottom
multiplied by the ones on the top, 50 times five.
For the next step, we need to
multiply the ones by the tens, which will give us the missing partial product. That means we’ll consider the ones
from the bottom, which is a three, and the tens place from the top number, two tens,
which we know is 20. The third partial product here is
then three times 20. So we can say that 60 belongs in
the missing space.
The final partial product is the
multiplying the ones by the ones, which is three times five, to get 15. When we’re working with partial
products, to find the final answer, we need to add all of the partial products
together. In the ones place, there’s just
five. Zero plus zero plus zero plus five
equals five. In the tens place, zero plus five
plus six plus one is 12. So we write down our two and carry
our one. And in the hundreds place, we have
a one plus zero plus two, so that’s three. In the thousands place, we only
have a one. And that means we can say that 25
times 53 is equal to 1325.
This question was two parts. The first part wanted the missing
number from the model, which was three times 20, so 60. And the second part was the product
of 25 times 53, which is 1325.
