What volume of water is in the cup?
We’re being asked to find the volume or the amount of water in the cup. We can see that the cup measures in millilitres. So, we know the answer will be an amount of millilitres. The numbers on the scale on the measuring cup go up in 10s. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and so on up to 100. This arrow shows the volume of water in the cup. How many millilitres of water are there?
The amount of water is between 50 and 60 millilitres. And each of the divisions between 50 and 60 is worth one millilitre. The water is halfway between 50 and 60 millilitres. Which number is halfway between 50 and 60? It’s 55.
The volume of water in the cup is 55 millilitres. We could see that the water was halfway between 50 and 60 on the scale. And we knew that 55 is halfway between 50 and 60. So, there are 55 millilitres of water in the cup.
