Ethan is baking cupcakes. He has 10 cupcakes cooling on the table and seven cupcakes in the oven. He puts icing on nine of the cupcakes on the table. If all of the cupcakes need to be iced by the end of the day, how many more cupcakes does he need to ice?
The question tells us there are 10 cupcakes on the table and seven cupcakes in the oven. If we add together seven and 10, that will tell us how many cupcakes Ethan has altogether. Seven plus 10 is 17.
The question also tells us that Ethan put icing on nine of the cakes. So if we calculate 17 take away nine, that will tell us how many cakes Ethan still has to ice. If we take away seven from 17, that will give us 10.
Then, we need to take away two more because nine is two more than seven. And we need to take away nine altogether. So 10 take away two is eight.
Ethan needs to ice eight more cupcakes.
