We are told in the question that Lilina reads one chapter per day for 19 days. Each of these chapters has 27 pages. We can therefore calculate the number of pages that are read in 19 days by multiplying 27 by 19. This is equal to 513. If we didn’t have a calculator, one quick way of checking this would be to firstly multiply 27 by 20. 27 multiplied by two is 54. Therefore, 27 multiplied by 20 is 540. As we want to calculate 27 multiplied by 19 and not by 20, we need to subtract 27 from 540. This gives us our answer of 513.

The book had a total of 562 pages. Therefore, we can calculate the number of pages remaining by subtracting 513 from 562. We could do this using column subtraction. We cannot subtract three from two.
