Which of the following numbers is greater than 9597? a) 6092, b) 1356, c) 9694, or d) 7391.
We can use a place value chart like this one to compare these five numbers. We’ll start with the number that we were given 9597 at the top. From there, we add 6092 to our chart, then 1356, 9694, and 7391.
When we work with ordering and place value, we want to look at the digits all the way
on the left. We’re given these four choices and we want to know which one is greater than
9597. Out of the four values we were given, one of them has a nine in the thousands
place. From there, we’ll need to move to the right.
We no longer need the other three options since we already know that 9694 is larger
than those three values. We just need to check that 9694 is larger than 9597. And we do that by comparing the values in the hundredth place. Six is larger than five. That means 9694 is larger than 9597.
Out of the four answer choices we were given, only one of them is greater than
9597. And that is c) 9694.
