Look at this diagram of the nervous
system, then answer the following questions. Which part, or parts, makes up the
central nervous system? What is the name of that part, or
parts?
As this is a two-part question,
let’s start by looking at part one of the question: Which part, or parts, makes up
the central nervous system? Let’s start by identifying the
three labels on the diagram. We can then identify which of those
three labels make up the central nervous system. Part 1 is the brain, part 2 is the
spinal cord, and part 3 is the nerves.
So, now that we have identified the
three parts, let’s think about which ones make up the central nervous system. The nervous system as a whole is
composed of two major systems: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous
system. We need to identify which of the
three labeled parts makes up each of these two systems.
The brain is an organ in the
central nervous system. The spinal cord is also a component
of the central nervous system. Together, these two components of
the central nervous system process and respond to information received from the
peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is
made up of only the nerves. So, the answer is part 1 and part
2. The central nervous system is made
up of parts 1 and 2.
Now that we have answered part one
of the question, let’s move on to part two: What is the name of that part or
parts? As we have discussed, the central
nervous system is made up of parts 1 and 2. So, let’s now name these. As we saw, part 1 is called the
brain. And part 2 is called the spinal
cord. So, the answer is brain and spinal
cord. The two parts that make up the
central nervous system are the brain and the spinal cord.
