A card is drawn from a deck of cards numbered one to 30. Find the probability of getting a card with a positive integer less than 20 on it.
We begin by recalling that probability is the likelihood or chance of an event occurring. And this probability can be written as a fraction, where the numerator is the number of favorable outcomes and the denominator is the total number of outcomes. In this question, we have a deck of cards numbered from one to 30. This means that the total number of outcomes is the number of cards, in this case 30.
We are asked to find the probability of selecting a card with a positive integer that is less than 20. A positive integer is a whole number greater than zero. This means that there are 19 cards that have a positive integer that is less than 20. The probability of selecting one of these cards is therefore equal to 19 over 30 or nineteen thirtieths.
