Look at these coins. One pence, 10 pence, 50 pence, five pence, 20 pence, two pence. What is the largest amount you could make using three of these coins?

To work out the largest amount we could make, we need to choose the three coins which are worth the most. Which of these coins is worth the most? It’s the 50-pence coin. The coin which has the next largest value is the 20-pence coin. 20 is more than 10, five, two, or one. Next, we should use the 10-pence coin because 10p is more than five p, two p, or one p.

Now we need to add these three coins, 50 add 20 add 10. 50p add 20p is 70p. 70 plus 10 is 80. The largest amount you could make using three of these coins is 80 pence. We picked the three coins with the greatest value then added them together. 50 plus 20 plus 10 equals 80 pence.
