Let’s think about rectangles! This shape has five sides. Is it a rectangle? This shape has four sides. Is it a rectangle? This shape has four sides. One of its sides is curved. Is it a rectangle? This shape has four sides. Its corners are not the same. Is it a rectangle? This is a square. Is it also a rectangle?

Let’s think about rectangles. What do we know about rectangles? We know a rectangle has four sides, four straight sides to be precise. We also know that the sides, which are opposite in a rectangle, are the same length. A rectangle also has four right angles. We’re given five different shapes. Each of the shapes are different, but each time we have to work out if the shape is a rectangle.

Let’s start by looking at the first shape. This shape has five sides. Is it a rectangle? No, rectangles have four sides. The second shape has four sides. It could be a rectangle. It has four straight sides. The opposite sides are the same length and it has four right angles. So the answer to the question, is it a rectangle, is yes. The third shape has four sides, so it could be a rectangle. But one of its sides is curved. We know that rectangles have four straight sides. So the answer to the question, is it a rectangle, is no.

Let’s look at the fourth shape. It has four sides, so it could be a rectangle, but its corners are not the same. It doesn’t have any right angles. So the answer to the question, is it a rectangle, is no. Our fifth shape is a square. And the question asks, is it also a rectangle? It does have four straight sides, its opposite sides are the same length, and it has four right angles. So the answer to the question, is it also a rectangle, is yes. We were asked to think about rectangles.

We were shown five different shapes and asked if they were rectangles. The first shape isn’t a rectangle. It has five sides. Rectangles have four sides. The second shape is a rectangle. It has four sides. The opposite sides are equal in length and it has four right angles. The third shape isn’t a rectangle. Although it has four sides, one of its sides are curved. Rectangles have four straight sides. The fourth shape isn’t a rectangle, either. It has four sides, but it doesn’t have any right angles. Rectangles have four right angles. And our fifth shape is a square. A square is also a rectangle. A square has four straight sides, its opposite sides are equally length, and it has four right angles.
