Using the listing method, write the set of integers that are less than negative 42 and greater than negative 47.

The word integers means whole numbers. They can be positive or negative. Let’s firstly consider the number line between negative 50 and negative 40. We need to find the set of values that are less than negative 42. This means they must be to the left of negative 42. They also need to be greater than negative 47. This means that the integers must be to the right of negative 47.

As our numbers could not be equal to these two values, we are left with four numbers between them. The four integers are negative 46, negative 45, negative 44, and negative 43. Adding our set notation gives us the set of integers that are less than negative 42 and greater than negative 47.
