Telling Time in Words: Time to the Hour

In this video, we will learn how to tell time to the hour on an analog clock and record the time in words.

We call this type of clock an analog clock. This part of the clock is called its face. The numbers on the clock are used to help us tell the time. In this video, we’re thinking about telling time to the hour. We can use the numbers on the face to tell us which hour it is. Analog clocks have two hands. The long hand is called the minute hand, and the short hand is called the hour hand.

When the minute hand is pointing to number 12, we know it’s something o’clock. The hour hand tells us what o’clock. On this clock, it’s 7 o’clock. When the minute and the hour hand are pointing at number 12, it means it’s 12 o’clock. Now, it’s 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 4 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 6 o’clock, 7 o’clock, 8 o’clock, 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock. Let’s practice telling the time to the hour.

What time is it? Find the missing number. It is what o’clock.

The question tells us it’s something o’clock. And if we look at the picture of the clock, we can see that the minute hand is pointing to number 12, which means it is something o’clock. Which hour is the hour hand pointing to? It’s pointing to number seven. The time is seven o’clock. The missing number is seven.

Fill in the blank. What time is it? It is what o’clock.

The minute hand on the clock is pointing to number 12. This means it’s something o’clock. To find out what the time is, we need to look at the hour hand. The hour hand is pointing to number four. That means it’s 4 o’clock. The missing word is four. The time is 4 o’clock.

Liam likes reading short stories. He decided to read a new one after finishing his homework at 9 o’clock. Which clock shows the time he starts reading?

The question tells us that Liam is going to start reading when he finishes his homework at 9 o’clock. We have to choose the clock which shows 9 o’clock. We know it’s something o’clock when the minute hand on the clock face is pointing to number 12. The minute hand on the first clock is pointing to number nine. It’s not something o’clock, and it’s not 9 o’clock. So this is not the correct clock.

Let’s look at the second clock. The minute hand or the long hand is pointing to number 12. So it is something o’clock. And the hour hand is pointing to number nine, which means it’s 9 o’clock. And we know that Liam starts reading at 9 o’clock. It’s something o’clock on the third clock. Did you work out the time? The hour hand is pointing to number three, which means it’s 3 o’clock. Liam starts reading at 9 o’clock. The clock which shows this time is the clock in the middle.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned how to tell time to the hour on an analog clock. And we’ve learned how to write the time in words.
