Write 5763 correct to the nearest 100.

If we consider the place value of this number, we have five thousands, seven hundreds, six tens, and three units or ones. As we need to round our number to the nearest 100, the key column is the tens column.

In this case, we have six tens. We round up if this number is greater than or equal to five. And six is greater than five. Rounding up gives us 5800. The hundreds number increases by one. This means that 5763 correct to the nearest 100 is 5800.

An alternative method would be to consider a number line between 5700 and 5800. The midpoint between these two numbers is 5750. Anything above this number, we would round up and anything below this number, we would round down. Our number was 5763, which is greater than 5750.

We would, therefore, round up to 5800 — the same answer as using our first method.
