In this video, we will learn how to find the missing numbers in number patterns. A number pattern is a series of numbers which we read from left to right. Before we can find missing numbers in patterns, first we have to find out what the rule is, in other words, what is happening to the numbers each time. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. These numbers are increasing by 10 each time. The rule of the pattern is to add 10. Let’s see if we can find the rule for the second pattern. 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15. The numbers are decreasing by five each time.

So the rule for this pattern is just subtract five or takeaway five each time. Once we found the rule, we can complete the pattern. The next number in this sequence would be 110 — 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110. And the next number in this sequence would be 10 because 10 is five less than 15. The rule of this pattern is to subtract five each time. Let’s practice some example questions. Remember, first we find the rule. Then we can complete the pattern.

What are the missing numbers in this sequence, 10, 20, a missing number, 40, 50, missing number, missing number. Before we can find the missing numbers, first, we need to find the rule for the pattern. What happens to the numbers each time? 10, 20, the missing number, 40, 50. And we don’t know the last two numbers in the sequence. The numbers are increasing by 10 each time. We’re counting in 10s. So the rule is to add 10. Now that we found the rule, we can complete the pattern and fill in the missing numbers. 20 add 10 is 30. 50 add 10 is 60. 60 add 10 is 70. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70. The missing numbers in the pattern are 30, 60, and 70.

Complete the following pattern. Five, 15, missing number, missing number, another missing number, 55. First, we need to find the rule. What’s happening to the numbers each time? How do we get from five to 15? Five plus 10 is 15. So the rule is two add 10 each time. 15 add 10 is 25. 25 add 10 is 35. and 35 add 10 is 45. First, we found the rule. Then we completed the pattern. Five, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55. The missing numbers are 25, 35, and 45.

Complete the following pattern. Eight, six, the missing number, another missing number. Remember, we need to find the rule first and then complete the pattern. How do we get from eight to six? Eight take away two is six. So the rule is to subtract two each time. Six take away two is four. And four take away two is two. Eight, six, four, two. The missing numbers in the pattern are four and two. In this video, we’ve learnt how to complete the missing numbers in number patterns. First, we find the rule.
