The diagram shows a simple outline
of the female reproductive system. What number indicates a fallopian
tube, oviduct?
Let’s review the name and functions
of each of these structures in the female reproductive system in order to answer our
question. We’ll start with the vagina,
indicated here as number 4. This is a muscular tube where
semen, containing sperm cells, is deposited during sexual intercourse. The cervix is labeled as number
3. This is the opening at the end of
the vagina that goes toward the uterus. The uterus is labeled as number
2. This is where the unborn baby
develops during pregnancy.
In order to start a pregnancy, an
egg cell is released by the ovaries, one of which is labeled as number 5. This egg cell, shown in green, is
released to a structure called the fallopian tube, also called the oviduct, which is
labeled as number 1. The egg cell moves along the
fallopian tube, where it can combine with or be fertilized by a sperm cell. As mentioned, sperm can be
introduced after sexual intercourse. The fertilized egg cell moves along
the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Inside the uterus, the fertilized
egg cell can implant into the uterine lining to start a pregnancy.
Getting back to our question, the
number that indicates one of the fallopian tubes is number 1.
