Emma made a table showing habits
that are good and those that are bad for the nervous system. Habits that are good for the
nervous system: exercising regularly, using tranquilizers or stimulants, getting
plenty of rest. Habits that are bad for the nervous
system: spending time in places with high levels of pollution, using addictive
substances. Which habit has Emma written in the
wrong place?
To answer this question, let’s look
at each habit in the table and assess whether it is in the correct place. We will start with the good
habits.
Let’s start by considering if
taking regular exercise, like running, is a good habit for the nervous system. Taking regular exercise helps to
keep nerve tissue healthy, stimulate the growth of new nerve cells, and promote the
growth of capillaries, which bring oxygen to the brain cells. So, exercising regularly is in the
correct place because it is a good habit.
Next, let’s consider if using
tranquillizers or stimulants is a good habit for the nervous system. Taking tranquillizers, such as
certain drugs, can cause slower reactions, sleepiness, and trouble focussing. Taking stimulants, like coffee, can
cause sleeplessness, increased heart rate, and nervous tension. So, using tranquillizers or
stimulants is in the wrong place because these are bad habits, not good habits.
Just to be certain, let’s carry on
checking to see if all the other habits are in the correct place. Let’s consider if getting plenty of
rest, sleeping around eight hours a night is advised, is a good habit for the
nervous system. While we sleep, the nervous system
can relax and recover from being alert all day, remove toxins that build up during
the day, and carry out important communications that it can’t do during the day. So, getting plenty of rest is in
the correct place because it is a good habit.
Let’s move on to look at the bad
habits now. First, let’s consider whether
spending time in places with high levels of pollution, such as near factories, is a
bad habit for the nervous system. Pollution can cause inflammation of
the brain, disorders of the brain, such as anxiety and depression, and general poor
brain health. So, spending time in places with
high levels of pollution is in the correct place because it is a bad habit.
Lastly, let’s consider if using
addictive substances, like cigarettes and other drugs, is a bad habit for the
nervous system. Addictive substances can have
negative impacts on memory, learning, and stress levels, which can then cause
further problems like sleeplessness and anxiety. So, using addictive substances is
in the correct place because it is a bad habit.
So, the habit that is in the wrong
place is using tranquillizers and stimulants.
