The image shows the structure of
the nucleus of an atom. What name is given to the
positively charged particles, X?
An atom is the smallest unit of
ordinary matter. Atoms are made up of smaller pieces
of matter called subatomic particles. The subatomic particles can be
found in the two main regions of the atom: the nucleus in the center of the atom and
energy levels outside of the nucleus. The energy levels are where very
small negatively charged particles called electrons are likely to be found.
The nucleus is composed of two
different types of subatomic particles. One type of subatomic particle in
the nucleus is the neutron. Neutrons are neutrally charged. The other type of subatomic
particle in the nucleus is the proton. Protons are positively charged.
From our discussion, we now know
that the positively charged particles in the nucleus of the atom are the
protons.
