Isabella used place value blocks to show how to add 383 and 574. What is the sum?

We’re going to use the place value blocks to help us represent this sum. Starting in the ones place, we have three plus four. Three plus four is seven. There are seven blocks in the ones place. That’s all we need to do with the ones place. And we can move on now to the tens place.

In the tens place, we’re adding eight plus seven. However, Isabella has done some regrouping. Isabella has taken 10 tens and turned them into a hundreds block because 10 tens is the same as 100. These 10 tens have now moved into the hundreds column. There are five remaining tens. So we write down a five in the tens place and then we write a one in the hundreds place because we’ve added one new hundred.

Our last step will be to add all the hundreds. We have one yellow hundred that we carried over plus three hundreds plus five hundreds. Three plus one plus five equals nine. There are nine hundreds blocks.

When we add 383 and 574, we find a total sum of 957.
