Which of the following percentages is equivalent to one over 20? Circle your answer. The choices are five percent, four percent, 20 percent, and one percent.

So first of all, what we need to do is think about what does percent mean. Well, percent means out of 100. And this is gonna help us to find out which one of our percentages is equivalent to one over 20 or one twentieth.

So if we want to think about our one over 20 or one twentieth as a percent, then if this is gonna be as a percent, then as a fraction we’re gonna have it as something over 100, cause as we’ve said it’s out of 100. So what we want to do is convert one twentieth to a fraction with 100 as the denominator.

So first of all, we need to see how do we get from 20 to 100. Well, to get from 20 to 100, we’re gonna have to multiply it by five. And that’s because two multiplied by five is 10, so therefore 20 multiplied by five is 100. And with a fraction, we need to remember, whatever you do to the denominator or the bottom you must do to the numerator or the top. So we’ve also got to multiply the numerator by five.

So as the numerator, we’re gonna have five. That’s because one multiplied by five is five. So we’ve got five over 100 or five out of 100. So this is gonna be equal to five percent. So therefore, we can say that the equivalent percentage to one over 20 or one twentieth is five percent. And we’ve circled it in blue.

And what we can also do is just consider what our other percentages would be as fractions. So we’d have four percent, but that’ll be four over 100, which would be equal to one over 25. And that’s cause if you divided four by four you get one and divided 100 by four you get 25. Then you have 20 percent.

Well, this is gonna be 20 over 100. So this is gonna be equal to one over five or one-fifth. And again, that’s because if you divide 100 by 20, you get five. If you divide 20 by 20, you get one. And one percent, this is just gonna be one over 100.

So we’ve just shown what the other percentages would be as fractions. But we’ve already said that the equivalent percentage to one over 20 or one twentieth is five percent.
