A group of 734 tourists travelled from Cairo to Aswan. The total cost of the trip was 412508 pounds. How much should each tourist pay?

So if we want to know how much each tourist should pay, and there are 734, we need to take our total of money and divide it by the number of tourists, so 734. So let’s begin with dividing. To begin dividing, we take 734 and decide how many times it goes into four. It goes in zero times. So we put a zero over the four. And zero times 734 is zero. And we subtract. Four minus zero is zero. And now we bring down the next number. We bring down the one. And we repeat the process. How many times the 734 go into 41? Zero times.

And it’s good to mention, we don’t actually have to write the zero in the beginning. Because when we write a number, we don’t write a zero first unless it’s simply just zero. So zero times 734 is zero. We take the 41 and subtract zero, and we get 41. So now we bring down the two, since it’s our next number, and we will repeat the process. How many times does 734 go into 412? That will be zero because 734 is still bigger than the number it’s asking to go into. So zero times 734 is zero. And we take 412 and subtract zero. And we get 412.

And now we bring down the five. So how many times does 734 go into 4125? It goes in five times. And five times 734 is equal to 3670. And now we subtract. Five minus zero is five. Two minus seven, we can’t do. So we need to borrow from the one. We borrow from the one, and it becomes a zero. And we make the two a 12. And 12 minus seven is five. And now we have zero minus six. Well, we’re gonna have to borrow from the four. We borrow from the four and it makes it a three. And we make the zero a 10. And 10 minus six is four. And now we need to take three minus three which is zero. So we have 455.

And now we bring down this zero. So how many times does 734 go into 4550? Six times. And six times 734 is equal to 4404. And now we subtract. We can’t take zero minus four. So we need to borrow from the five. We borrow from the five and it becomes a four. And we make the zero a 10. And 10 minus four is six. And now, we have four minus zero which is four. And then we have five minus four which is one. And then four minus four is zero.

So now, we bring down the eight. How many times does 734 go into 1468? Twice. And two times 734 is exactly 1468. So when we subtract them, we get zero. Meaning, there is no remainder. So we erase the zeros in front of the 562. And that will be our answer. So the cost of the trip for each tourist is 562 pounds.
